Virtual Kwanzaa Day 1- UMOJA

The Community Unity Music Education Program (CUMEP) in Ithaca, N. Y. presents Southside Community Center’s Virtual Kwanzaa celebration for 2020. We strive to provide concrete examples of what the Kwanzaa principles look like in ACTION.

Kwanzaa is a cultural celebration that honors Black people and the desire to connect with our ancestry.

The celebration lasts for 7 days, from December 26th to January 1st. Kwanzaa was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, a Los Angeles-based activist and professor.

In response to riots and other outcries in the 60’s, Dr. Karanga wanted to acknowledge the pain and struggle associated with being Black by helping us discover Black joy.

The Kwanzaa principles can be seen as a source of healing in ACTION. Providing examples for how the Southside Community Center family brings the principles to life despite the pandemic, we have engaging videos to share with you about each day of Kwanzaa (December 26 – January 1)!!!!
